With Ascot season ahead, what better time to start thinking about ostentatious headwear? Just in time to inspire us, Stephen Jones, one of British Fashion’s best loved characters (whose client list boasts style icons Carla Bruni, Madonna and Kylie) is exhibiting a selection of his most intriguing creations at The Bowes Museum in County Durham. Seems a long way from London doesn’t it? But if you’re prepared to make a country getaway then County Durham has plenty of greenery and now millinery to keep a gal happy. Described by Italian Vogue’s Anna Piaggi as ‘the maker of the most beautiful hats in the world’, Stephen Jones has worked with some of the world’s most prominent fashion houses and designers during his illustrious career, including Jolie’s favourites; Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Giles Deacon and Christian Dior. Who can forget his artists palette creation for Dior? The exhibition opens on 19th May where a selection of his most beguiling hats will be on display until September. If you can’t get up to CD, then head to his boutique and atelier which is still based in Covent Garden. Or visit the V&A whose permanent exhibitions have plenty of Stephen Jones originals on display. The Bowes Museum, [...]

Reflexology London: Chi Yu Wellness Centre For a London reflexology session that will leave you feeling truly restored, head to Chi Yu Wellness Centre in the heart of London’s Marylebone. Jolie sent Ursula Rose to experience a reflexology treatment, where her expectations were exceeded… Much more than a pampering foot massage, reflexology, when carried out by an expert, is a fantastic holistic treatment to restore balance and order to your body. I was weary from the aftermath of London Fashion Week when I visited for my treatment, and found the traditionally Japanese Chi Yu Wellness Centre to be just what I needed in so many ways. The box of chocolates in the waiting area, the jasmine tea that greeted me on arrival and the personal consultation at the start of my treatment, all let me know that I was in safe hands. Mami Tsang, the founder of Chi Yu, was my therapist for the evening, and during my assessment gently asked me if I was stressed? Massively. She asked about any health worries I had, how much sleep I was having (hardly any), how much I was working (too many weekends). And while she no doubt hears similar complaints from [...]

Spring/Summer 2012 Beauty Trends Round Up Maggie Tran The days are lighter, the trees are blossoming and we’ve finally put our snow boots and faux-fur parkas away for another season. Yep, Spring/Summer is officially here and to get you prepped and preened we’ve rounded up some of the hottest beauty trends for the sunny season to come. Graffiti Hair Last season’s coloured dip-dye phenomenon steps up a notch and goes full throttle rainbow with the likes of Thakoon sending models down the runway with freshly painted hair of blue, yellow, pink and green while Meadham Kirchoff introduced a prettier take with accents of pastel against blonde. Try: Fudge Paint Box Colour Pretty Flamingo £8.95, www.fudge.com / 01282683100 to channel LA model Charlotte Free’s punk-pink locks. Immaculately Nude Skin This season’s super sheer and radiantly nude complexion will urge you to put away those heavy duty foundations and allow your skin to breathe a sigh of relief. Give your skin a boost and prepare to bare with a brightening skincare regime then follow with a sweep of tinted moisturiser and pearly highlighter to get that HD-ready glow. Try: WEI Lychee Thirst Relief Mask (£57.00, www.beautybay.com) to encourage a healthy [...]

Lancashire girl, penguin lover and effortlessly cool fashion designer, Jolie sent Ursula Dewey to meet with the rising talent that is Charlotte Taylor. “It looks like a deformed gangrene foot. It doesn’t work at all. It’s supposed to be a parrot.” Charlotte explains. The sample jumper she is wearing is the first attempt at integrating a new pattern from her autumn/winter 2012 collection into knitwear, but the idea is going to have to be ditched. “It just doesn’t work. Sometimes you just have to try things to see how they turn out.” An approach that has worked very well so far for the 28-year-old fashion designer. Lancashire born Charlotte Taylor looks every inch the London creative. With a discrete nose stud, a fresh face free of make-up (blessed with bronzed skin and caramel hair) she is a natural beauty with an independent sense of style. A tailor’s measuring tape hangs loosely around her neck and she is wearing a plain tee, the aforementioned ‘gangrene foot jumper’ and a pair of skinny jeans that are teamed with well-worn Converse, giving her an air of effortless cool. Especially when surrounded by the paraphernalia of her studio – fabric swatches, photos of collections [...]

Ten steps to beautiful hair We all know we need to keep it hydrated, cleansed and conditioned but what are the stand out products and expert tips that will really transform the health and happiness of our hair? Nourish it daily That doesn’t mean over charging it with product, but ensuring you have the right diet to support healthy hair growth. Protein is vital for hair health as is omega-3. Cardiologist Professor Martin Cowie says: “It’s well recognised that omega-3 nutrients are important to maintain our health – from good heart health, to supporting brain function and the condition of skin and in particular hair. Oily fish, such as mackerel or sardines, provide the best natural source of omega-3 nutrients.” To reap the rewards aim to get one portion of oily fish into your diet per week, or try taking an omega -3 supplement, like Seven Seas Health Oils Radiant You, £4.99, available from Holland & Barrett. Willow Hair say for hair health, a balanced diet is vital, “Protein is key as our hair is made up largely of protein. Up your intake of vitamin E too as it promotes hair growth & reduces hair fall, do ensure you [...]

New Season Skin By Maggie Tran Prepare to slough away the flawless, velvet-finish complexion of winter past, and embrace one of this season’s most refreshing and welcoming trends – perfectly, imperfect skin. Breathing a sigh of relief from all us ‘real women’, we can now give our skin a well-deserved break from heavy foundations and put our sculpting brushes down for another season. By Maggie Tran. This summer, the beauty focus is hyper real skin. It’s all about mimicking that pre-makeup, post-gym, fresh-faced glow. Think super dewy complexions that verge on looking sweaty, á la the House of Holland models who graced the runway with nothing more than a slick of black liner and a wash of peach eye shadow. At Proenza Schouler we saw freckles taking centre stage with Jeremy Scott even drawing on faux freckles, creating a sense of adolescent naivety for a truly natural and youthful complexion. Of course with the trudge of winter still upon us, it’s hard to depart from our trusty concealers and miracle foundations just yet. So to get skin-confident and ready to bare all, now is the time to MOT your skincare regime – in the words of the incredible Mr. Shu [...]

Nail notes: Nail trends for autumn/winter 2012 By Maggie Tran Fashion Week is back and as ever, the Jolie crew have been running around town with our kitten heels and note books in tow to bring you the most beautiful trends, fresh from the catwalk. By Maggie Tran Already we’ve fallen in love with the punk-plaited up do at Simone Rocha, went mad with excitement for Prabal Gurung’s iridescent feather-effect eyes and even bumped into Leandra Medine, AKA The Man Repeller, AKA one lady with the most enviable wardrobe… and that was only New York and London. How fabulous! Despite the breathtaking make-up and stunning hair styles, we couldn’t help but sit up and take notice of the distinctive and rather artistic nails which flashed and glimmered on the catwalk. From the kooky and fantastic sushi nail wraps at Fred Butler to Vivienne Westwood’s tattooed talons, nails are going to be a big beauty focus for AW-12. We caught up with Freelance Make-Up Artist & Nail Technician Katie Jane Hughes who headed up the FashionistA Make-Up team, to create the oh-so-adorable glitter heart nails and make-up for PPQ – Jolie’s favourite nail look of the season. Jolie: What was [...]

If you’re looking for an excuse to go to Paris, then how about making a trip to check out the latest place-to-be-seen-in? La Vue is the latest bar to have launched that is fast becoming a trendies hotspot, offering a unrivalled view of the City of Lights. La Vue Of course Paris is always breath-taking, but seeing it from within the lilac interior of the ‘La Vue’ bar on the 34th floor of the Hotel Lafayette with a girlfriend or beau homme Francais, makes it look even more breath-taking, especially after a champagne cocktail or two. While the interior is almost seventies retro in it’s penchant for pink leather and UV lighting, it’s still a fine place to go, as the crowning glory of one of Paris’ finest hotel’s you can’t go wrong. With a panoramic view of the city, it’s perfectly placed to watch the Eiffel Tower light show. The interior was created by Italian designer, Pier Luigi Copat who developed the architectural creation, and the majestic chandelier made with 11,000 glass rods which diffuse sensual light – making all of those in La Vue, in the world’s most romantic city, look even more rose tintedly gorgeous.
